Making naan is surprisingly simple and can be done on the stovetop. Here’s my recipe:
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon oil (canola, olive, or vegetable oil of choice)
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 1/2 cup warm water (or more, as needed, to form a soft firm dough)
Mix the dry ingredients, then add the wet ingredients in the center of the dough and combine until you form a soft dough. Add additional warm water if needed. It’s helpful if all ingredients are at room temperature.
Let the dough set for about an hour, covered with a cloth, then cut into twelve pieces, and shape them into small rounds. Put the shaped pieces under a cloth while rolling so they don’t dry out.
Bake each naan on a cast iron or other pan at medium heat. After bubbles form, flip the naan to cook on the other side. Lightly brush ghee or olive oil on the finished naan if desired.
